Alligator Pepper, The Super Nature’s Gift

Atare in Yoruba. Alligator pepper is the English name. The Botanical name is Aframomum melegueta. It is also called grains of paradise.


Alligator pepper is an herbaceous perennial of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). It’s being sold it with its pod. In West Africa, we use it in cuisine, in cooking because of its heat, pungency, and spicy aroma.


It is packed with many health benefits and it has many cultural and traditional uses.

In Yoruba culture, Alligator pepper is often given to a newly born baby as part of the routine baby welcoming process, it is often used along with bitter cola and other kola nuts at ceremonies and is a welcoming gift to visitors.


The health benefits of alligator pepper are many, but one major health benefit is sexual disorders.


Alligator pepper is an aphrodisiac, i.e. it stimulates erection in males.

It stimulates the production of testosterone, a hormone responsible for sperm production. Any herb that is classified as an aphrodisiac can cross the brain-blood barrier and quickly stimulate areas of sexual arousal in the central nervous system.

  • Grind seeds of alligator pepper, mix with honey and drink two spoonfuls daily for the management of Low Blood Pressure.
  • Dried powder of Cerathoteca sesamoides (ewe ekuku in Yoruba) and alligator pepper is a super recipe for sperm production.
  • Varicocele (An enlargement of the veins within the scrotum)
  • Alligator pepper, Ginger, Epo ahun (alstonia bonei), GANGRONEMA latifolium stem (Madumaro) Carpolobia lutea (Egbo osunsun) Tincture.
