HEALTH BENEFITS OF MAIZE (CORN)

What do you call Corn in your native language? There is no community under the sun where corn cannot be found and it is available in varieties of colors, White, Yellow, Red, Purple, Off white etc.
 
Apart from being part of hundreds of food recipes all the world, Corn has some symbolic representations. It signifies fertility, abundance and sustainability in many cultures all over the world and also a symbol of nourishment and blessings.
Corn is primarily a staple food but with several nutrients.
 
Corn is primarily composed of carbohydrates, with around 25 grams per 100 grams of cooked corn. It provides a good source of energy for the body, in fact when used to prepare Agidi/Eko, it’s carbohydrates content is more concentrated than when eaten in whole.
 
Rich in dietary fiber, with around 2-3 grams per 100 grams of cooked corn. Fiber aids in digestion, promotes satiety, and helps regulate blood sugar levels. Tuwo, one of the West African corn recipe is an example of fiber-rich corn food
 
Corn is a good source of various vitamins, like vitamin C, vitamin B1, and vitamin B9. It also contains smaller amounts of vitamins E, K, and several B vitamins and little amount of protein. Minerals like phosphorus, magnesium, and manganese and small amounts of potassium, zinc, and iron can be found in corn also
 
You can rely on corn for antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, which are beneficial for eye health. It also contains phenolic compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties. These antioxidants help protect the eyes from harmful UV rays and reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration.
 
Most of the skin care products also contains some parts of Corn due to its moisturizing and soothing properties. It helps maintain skin elasticity, hydrates the skin, and may alleviate conditions like dryness, itching, and irritation. Apart from the corn itself, the silk and leave so are also beneficial in treatment of some health issues. The silk has been used traditionally to aid in wound healing. It has antimicrobial properties that can help prevent infections and accelerate the healing process.
 
It is also suitable for Urinary tract health problems because of it diuretic properties, which can promote urine production and help with flushing out toxins. It is often used as a natural remedy for urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and bladder issues.
